About US

“If you build it, they will come.” - Field of Dreams 1989

My musical path began at a very young age with my two older brothers blasting Van Halen, RUSH, Ozzy, & Led Zeppelin from their bedrooms across the hall. I loved the sound coming from those speakers and it wasn't long after my Mom took me to a little music store in town called Virginia Music Co in 1988 to start my own sonic journey.

I remember the glass cases filled with Fender Stratocasters, the owner, Bill Darr, helping us with my first guitar, and getting guitar lessons with Chris Perkins which lasted two years. The fire had been lit, you could say.

From 92-96, I spent every week at Guitar Works learning from local legend John McNiel, my guitar hero and friend to this day. Thanks to John, I got into VCU’s classical guitar program and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Music degree in 2000. Those were some of the best years of my life. Playing guitar everyday and learning from masters of the instrument like Cory Blake, John Patykula, and many more.

I taught at Southern Music Center, Richmond Music Center, and A Major Music from 96-04 and I loved the small family music store vibe. We were all close and helped each other out. Some of my favorite memories were created in those stores.

Fast forward 20 years and things are coming full circle. I realized how much I missed the experience of being part of a “local music extended family” and I personally believe if there was a music store in town with a great family atmosphere, personal service, and value for its customers, people would flock to it.

River City Guitars is that place. A family owned music store focusing on the individual from beginner to advanced, ensuring a positive and memorable buying experience. A place where all skill levels can buy, sell, trade, take lessons, and more importantly, feel welcomed. RCG is RVA’s new home for the ultimate down home six-string experience. Welcome to River City Guitars, where the music flows. I hope you'll stay a while.
